CALL AND RESPONSE

what a great time I had on Saturday.
Open Studio...Thanks to the folks who came by
Thank you for your comments and compliments and questions
you provided  feed back
much valued feed back
painting is a pretty solo operation so
feed back is a BIG DEAL
selling is one [very important !] indicator of appreciation
and

so is having a visitor/observer/participant   looking and ... SEEING
because
ART IS A PARTICIPATORY ENDEAVOR

A sort of a call and response thing ...
don't you think?

Morning Exercises

Another morning exercise in my studio ...just FUN
Here you go...
"Carrots in the Bag" 8x10

I love the  colors.... beautiful colors discovered in the most unlikely places
Plastic wrap !

And on the fall leaves just outside my door...
detail "Falling" 8x10  oil
the reflections, the refractions...

Well its really about the Light, isn't it?
“Light, my light, the world-filling light, the eye-kissing light, heart-sweetening light!

Ah, the light dances, my darling, at the centre of my life; the light strikes, my darling, the chords of my love; the sky opens, the wind runs wild, laughter passes over the earth.

The butterflies spread their sails on the sea of light. Lilies and jasmines surge up on the crest of the waves of light.

The light is shattered into gold on every cloud, my darling, and it scatters gems in profusion.

Mirth spreads from leaf to leaf, my darling, and gladness without measure. The heaven's river has drowned its banks and the flood of joy is abroad.”

Escape Artists

We get together to escape TO paint or  FROM painting  or ... ?!
just to relax and bike along to beach, climb the dunes...
and enjoy the fellowship of other artists.
This year at Cape May  the escapees  settled into  a redone big old victorian house. It was easy to get lost up one staircase and down another with porches to paint on and around the corner, beautiful beaches and  dunes.
ok, well there WERE some storms...    [9x12  Pond and Storm Clouds]

but when it was sunny AHHHH                                  [ Scudding Clouds , detail]
And we could shelter from the chilly winds along the docks [6x8 Fleet's In]

Or just stand out there and get wet [12 x 16 The Jetty]

Winter Wind and Waves

Time can be marked by the second, season, or life span... and at the beach by the crash and whisper of wave after wave.
I love painting waves. I love standing at the farthest reach, waiting for the waves to break  "just so"
Watch. Paint. Watch. Paint. Step back. Watch ...
Sand changes colors within seconds. Water shifts   like a chameleon. Transparent, translucent, opaque... now reflecting sky, now sandy foam.
Yup,  I love it

Sketch of the Beach   8x10 oil on panel

These pieces were done at Bethany Beach. I was there with three friends for a few days to, well, paint. We also ate well and talked late into the night [a little scrabble, too]

 Curling     8x10    oil on panel
The weather was winter soft. Clear til south winds brought a misty cloud cover.
I started with the sketch and kind of got cooking especially with the last two.

Snow Camp

 Snow camp
...that's what Stapelton Kearns [ our fearless leader] calls it .
Cool ... or is that COLD?
So Linda Epstein and I packed our long underwear, gloves and super-Pak [arctic level of insulation] boots and painting gear into her Outback and headed for the white mountains.
Great information from Stape about
1.American landscape painters mid 19th century to, well, now
2.How to keep the paint moving on your palette at 0 degrees [...KEEP it MOVING!]
3.Innumerable on-site tips about composition, color, brush stroke, more composition
4.the importance of initial layout, wipe out , re layout ...
